A Drive through Foxlease estate - May 2007
- Photo 1 - We've left our farm, and have taken the gravel road
to the back entrance of Foxlease, a mere 2 miles up the road. The day is a beautiful warm May afternoon - perfect for taking photos
and a quiet drive through this beautiful estate.
- Photo 2 - Going past the manor house with their beautiful new gates.
There were several horses in adjoining fields that were excited to see us, prancing and galloping up and down their fields. The ponies
ignored these silly creatures, continuing their easy trot along the estate road.
- Photo 3 - Halfway through the estate we decided to take the road past the lake that
featured the elegant footbridge over to the cabin on the island.
- Photo 4 - The road also leads to two polo fields which were silent that afternoon, waiting
for the later part of the afternoon when the polo ponies would be taken out for a bit of practice. As it was, we had the place to ourselves.
- Photo 5 - The footbridge to the island cabin in the middle of the lake.
- Photo 6 - Past the lake and now going down the old back road that predated back to
the colonial era. This road still is called Randolph's Road, and ends at Randolph's Corner.
- Photo 7 - Just prior to this point we had come against a vine-riddled tree down across the old road.
There was no way around it, so Anne got out and pulled the encroaching vines aside just enough to squeeze the carriage and ponies past. The ponies did a beautiful
job -- not blinking an eye.
- Photo 8 - The stream mid-way down the old road. It was running clear and strong
from the recent rains. The ponies didn't even pause -- they just strolled right in and out the other side.
- Photo 9 - We exited off Randolph's Road before coming to the end, and took another old
road which the county had abandoned decades ago (the road having reverted back to private ownership) and then out onto the mowed paths through
some beautiful fields. The estate that owns this land mows the carriage paths for both us and other carriage drivers (4 in hands) in the
neighborhood. The grounds keeper does a wonderful job!
- Photo 10 - The mowed paths led to several old roads which lead through the calm, quiet
woods which are laid with woodchips to keep the paths open and the mud at a minimum.
- Photo 11 - The peace and quiet of the woods
- Photo 12 - Out of the woods and into the fields overlooking Cannon Hill Farm.
- Photo 13 - The fields all led back to the gravel roads, and here we are passing
the front drive of Cannon Hill. Sometimes we drive through the estate, exiting out of the back road just below our farm.
- Photo 14 - Heading towards home.
- Photo 15 - The road stretching ahead.
- Photo 16 - Back home. My wonderful neighbor and driving companion, Anne,
